MONON TRAIL
LAKE COUNTY

The Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville Railway was also known by several nicknames, the Monon Railroad and the Hoosier Line. Coming out of its connection and access to Chicago in Hammond, the line went almost due south to Dyer before turning toward a more southeasterly pathway towards Monon and Indianapolis. North of Dyer, the tracks were abandoned and eventually turned into a trail. With the recent creation of the South Shore West Lake Corridor, the Monon right-of-way was revitalized, and the trail was moved to the side of the tracks, creating a rail with trail arrangement. This 4.4-mile long trail connects several of the stations, allowing locals to ride to their nearest station, between stations, or ride to the end and bicycle back.
