LAKE
COUNTY
Lake County is the second most populous county in Indiana. Lake County has a strong industrial beginning, part of which can be seen today, however, over the past few decades has managed to transition itself into a suburban area for the growing Chicago metropolitan area. Part of the Indiana Dunes National Park is in Lake County, providing recreational opportunities for residents and there is access to commuter rail in the forms of the South Shore Line and Amtrak Wolverine service. Crown Point, the county seat, is home to many historic places, and was well known as a place where people could get a marriage license without a waiting period. Lake County is home to the largest town in Indiana, Merrillville with a population of over 35 thousand. Eight colleges or universities are based or have campuses in Lake County.
