JENNINGS COUNTY

Jennings County is home to the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, a facility designed to train first responders as well as the military.  Part of the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge is in Jennings County - initially a part of the Jefferson Proving Ground, a munitions testing facility, the wildlife refuge is off limits to the public due to the high cost to remove unexploded munitions.  While the town of Vernon is the county seat, it is the city of North Vernon that is more heavily populated.  During the Civil War, Morgan’s Raiders came to Vernon demanding the surrender of the town.  It was the local militia that defended the town until reinforcements arrived.  Pictured is the North Vernon Downtown Historic District.
